The Manvel Volunteer Fire Department

6212 Masters Rd. Manvel, TX 77578

(281) 692-0279

History

The Manvel Volunteer Fire Department is located in Manvel, Texas, a small city, 20 miles south of Houston, in northern Brazoria County.  Manvel Volunteer Fire Department was established in April of 1953 and was serving basically a rural and farming area. The typical home was on 1-5 or more acres. The Fire Department is a combination volunteer/paid department composed of 21 active Firefighters, six members being career fire fighters working in other jurisdictions.  The paid fire fighters work part time and are on volunteer status at all times. The Department provides a highly trained fire fighting team capable of handling emergencies, including structural fires, vehicle extrication, and all types of rescues and other catastrophes.  Manvel VFD has grown from 1 small rented building located at 5911 Masters Rd (training building now) and two stations(#1- 6211 Masters and # 2-8601 South Masters). With the help of a Venoco grant last year we were able to increase the usage of the training facility and construct a live burn building.

Mission

The mission of the fire department and its member is to provide a safe environment with proper equipment and training for all firefighters and emergency personnel for any given emergency.     Providing service to the City of Manvel and all of its ETJ (54 sq miles), 22,000 residents and mutual aid to all surrounding communities in Brazoria County. We are under contract with the Brazoria County Emergency Service District - 3. This District is composed of eleven fire departments and four ambulance services. Mutual aide requests are provided to any department that requests assistance in Brazoria County and adjacent Cities.

Community Spirit

Current roster consists of 24 volunteers, 3 rookies, 7 part time paid personnel.    This year the members and their families walked with the fire trucks handing out candy and toys along the parade routes for Fourth of July and the Christmas parade.   Firefighters met with and gave instruction to elementary school children during Fire Prevention Week. Participated in the annual “ Fill the Boot for Muscular Dystrophy” in which time members collected over $ 13,500.00 for Jerry's kids. "Free Pictures with Santa" has become a tradition for the fire department. The wivesof the volunteers provide homemade cookies, punch and small toys to each and every child that participates and parents receive a nice photo of their child with Santa. During the year the fire fighters participate in many different activities, including birthday parties, National Night Out and numerous church activities. Tours of the fire station and trucks are given to scout troupes and other organizations upon request.

On September 13, 2009 Hurricane Ike made its presence knownto the City of Manvel. During the weeks that passed, the fire department fed some of the County Sheriffs , Manvel EMS, police officers and citizens that came to the station looking for assistance. On any given day 75 to 100 people requested and received assistance from the fire department .   Citizens were provided a place to rest, sleep, shower and eat during the hard times. Food was donated to the fire department by its members and local organizations who responded the need of the community.   The fire department purchased necessary supplies to accommodate the community.
